Meteorites stolen from Utrecht museum

One of the only meteorites ever found in the Netherlands has been stolen from the Sonnenborgh Museum and Observatory in Utrecht. Several other unique meteorites were also taken.

Reportedly, the possibility exists that the meteorites were not targeted. The meteorites were in a safe that the thieves stole on Monday night. The pride of the collection was a stone that hit the Zeelandic town Serooskerke in 1925. Museum director Bas Nugteren says that there are five meteorites possessed by the museum that are known to have landed in the Netherlands, each being completely unique. The museum director calls the stolen meteorite a national heritage and hopes that the thieves will return it, RTV Utrecht reports. He goes on to say that he does not fear the meteorite being sold as it is described so well that any potential buyer would recognize it instantly.
