Green cars not as beneficial as thought

Economy cars are relatively widespread throughout the Netherlands, but they have not reduced CO2-emissions as much as previously expected. The tax reduction on 'green' cars means that a higher volume of cars have been sold, and these vehicles now seem less economical than on paper according to the Environmental Statistics Agency.

Since 2006, the Netherlands is one of Europe's leading consumers of economy cars. However, the government has not seen revenue from the county's green driving lifestyle. The purchase tax has been made dependent on the CO2-emissions, which means that tax revenue has dropped with €1.5-2 billion since 2007.
