Dutchman: life in prison for Ireland murder
A 42-year-old Dutchman, Jacky Lumi was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 31-year-old fellow Dutch national Kamal El Habsati, with whom he shared an apartment in Dublin. Lumi killed El Habsati on December 1 2012 by stabbing him 21 times after an argument over a €4 internet bill. The men had begun working and living together just a few months earlier, but Lumi quickly regretted the decision and started complaining about his roommate not cleaning up, cooking in the middle of the night, and being slow with paying his bills.
As a matter of fact Lumi turned in his notice to his boss and lesser a week before the killing, because he feared he would end up killing El Habsati if he stayed. He ended up doing just that when the argument about the internet bill escalated. Lumi threw El Habsati on the ground, but discovered El Habsati had a knife in his hand. He wrestled the knife free and stabbed El Habsati, with the intent to kill. The lesser found the body a couple of days later. Lumi tried to get the charges changed to manslaughter on grounds of provocation, without success. The day after the murder Lumi traveled to several European cities and finally turned himself in to the police in Rome, Italy. He described himself as a "psychopath", who was "100 percent" guilty and "deserved the death penalty." The Dutchman also told the court he had suffered a "burnout" and had been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. None of his arguments helped his case and Jacky Lumi only nodded when he heard the jury found him guilty of murder by majority verdict of eleven to one, and he was sentenced to life in prison.
