Python lays 17 eggs in Emmen zoo

A reticulated python in the Asia habitat in the Emmen zoo laid 17 eggs, as far as the caretakers could count. The python is native to Southeast Asia. The python stays on the eggs to protect them, making it hard to count.

"Particular to the species are the regular muscle contractions to generate additional heat, so the young develop better and faster," said a spokesperson. The mother will not eat anything during the time she stays on the eggs, which may take 2,5 to 3 months, depending on the heat. Once the eggs hatch, the young have to take care of themselves.
