Romanian prosecution appeals verdict art theft
The Romanian public prosecution will appeal the verdict against two suspects in the case of the robbery of the Kunsthal in Rotterdam last year.Prime suspect Radu Dogaru (29) and his accomplice, Eugen Darie (25) both received sentences of six years and eight months in prison last week. The initial sentence, demanded against Dogaru was eighteen years imprisonment. Darie , who drove the stolen paintings from the Netherlands to Romania, had already announced to appeal the verdict. He thinks the sentence is too high.

The case was repeatedly delayed. Some sessions were postponed due to form errors and dissatisfaction of lawyers with the investigation. On the night of October 16 on 17, 2012 the suspects broke into the Rotterdam Kunsthal. Seven paintings, by Picasso and Matisse, were stolen. The stolen art was never recovered. The mother of Dogaru initially told the prosecutors she burned the paintings, but later withdrew that statement. Ash residue was found in her oven, possibly from three of the stolen paintings.
