Police in the Amsterdam region said there were no known injuries in an apparent shooting that took place Monday afternoon. Investigators were still canvassing the scene about an hour after gunshots rang out in Duivendrecht, part of the Ouder-Amstel municipality in Noord-Holland.

The shooting was first reported to emergency services just after 3:20 p.m. on Monday, police said. Officers were dispatched quickly, as well as a trauma team in a helicopter and two ambulances.

Junaid I. was sentenced to 10 years in prison for threatening an attack on PVV leader Geert Wilders by the court in The Hague on Monday. The court convicted the 27-year-old Pakistani man of preparing for a murder with a terrorist purpose. The sentence is higher than the six years the Public Prosecutor demanded.

The number of young doctors in the Netherlands struggling with burnout symptoms increased significantly over the past two years, according to a quickscan study by care providers' organization VvAA. Currently 20 percent of doctors under the age of 35 have burnout symptoms, compared to 13 percent two years ago, the Volkskrant reports.

At 20 percent with burnout symptoms, young doctors score far worse than the national average of 15 percent and their older colleagues at 11 percent.

Multiple parties in Dutch parliament are calling on the government to intervene in mental healthcare in order to prevent serious crimes. This follows reports that triple-murder suspect Thijs H.'s parents unsuccessfully tried to have him admitted in the days before two people were stabbed to death while walking their dogs in Heerlen.

The first_snow of the season fell in Heerlen and Kerkrade, among others, at around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, according to Weeronline. As the snow was combined with rain, it didn't turn the landscape white and did not cause icy road problems. No more snow is expected in the coming days.

The last time snow fell in the Netherlands was on May 4th in Limburg. Last year the first snowfall of the season happened on November 20th in Emmen and Terr Apel.

Several people Including the head of radical nationalist group Pegida were arrested in Apeldoorn at the national arrival of Sinterklaas, the winter holiday folklore character who brings gifts to children. Police say that most of those arrested were protestors who refused orders to move to a cordoned off area for demonstrations.

Posters featuring anti-discrimination activist Jerry Afriyie as Zwarte Piet were plastered all over Den Haag late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The posters use a digitally-manipulated portrait of Afriyie, turning him into the racist caricature he has led a charge against for years.

Hundreds of posters were affixed along the parade route for the arrival of Sinterklaas in Den Haag. They were glued to storefronts and boats in the harbor, according to broadcaster Omroep West.

The police are urgently looking for 13-year-old Goiia. The girl disappeared in The Hague on Wednesday, when cycling home from school. A missing child alert was issued by the police. 

Goiia left the St. Maartenscollege in Voorburg at 2:10 p.m. on her bicycle with a friend. The two cycled together until they reached Laakkade in The Hague. There they said goodbye to each other and cycled in different directions. That was the last time Goiia was seen.

Last year road traffic accounted for 17 percent of the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the Netherlands, according to Statistics Netherlands. The total CO2 emissions from road traffic was 2 percent higher in 2018 than in 2017 and 28 percent higher than in 1990.

Passenger cars accounted for 62 percent of the CO2 emissions in road traffic. Heavy goods vehicles and buses accounted for 20 percent.

Police in Eindhoven on Thursday evening sent a team of heavily armed and masked officers into a packed and busy train as part of a search for suspect. Authorities were vague about the person of interest, saying only that it concerned an incident in Rotterdam, according to Omroep Brabant.

"We have just been able to arrest a person," police said just before 7:15 p.m. The arrest was made at the request of another division, the Oost Brabant division of the police noted.

The number of unemployed people in the Netherlands increased in the third quarter, compared to the previous quarter, for the first time in 5.5 years, according to Statistics Netherlands. In the third quarter there were 319 thousand unemployed people, 14 thousand more than in the second quarter. The unemployment rate rose from 3.3 percent to 3.4 percent.

The government can solve the nitrogen emission problem by making public transit a more attractive option with a massive investment, according to NS and ProRail. The rail manager and -company propose that the government invest over 20.6 billion euros in the railways until 2040, for dozens of improvements, AD reports.

The organizations want to shorten the travel time from Leeuwarden and Groningen to the Randstad by making adjustments to the Hanze line, for example. Train journeys from Twente, Nijmegen and Vlissingen can also be up to 30 minutes faster with specific adjustments

Limburg residents may well see the first snowfall of the season on Friday, according to Buienradar. And while it is wet snow that is expected - half snow, half water - the Limburg landscape may turn white for a while during the early morning, Buienradar meteorologist Marc de Jong said to RTL Nieuws.

So-called wet snow occurs when the upper part of the air column between a cloud and the ground is very cold, around -30 degrees, while the lower part of that column is still above 0 degrees. "Then the snow falls melting to earth", De Jong explained.

For years the Tax Authority ignored internal reports and complaints about the way it treats citizens. The service wrongly demanded money back from tens of thousands of people, without handling their complaints about it, and ignored former tax official Pierre Niessen when he reported this to the highest level, Niessen said in a letter sent to parliament, RTL Nieuws, and Trouw.

There is a culture of fear within the Tax Authority, Niessen said, resulting in his colleagues being afraid to report issues to their managers.

Personnel data from a fruit wholesaler in Hedel, Gelderland accidentally ended up in the criminal file of a major cocaine investigation, the Public Prosecution Service in Oost-Nederland confirmed. In a statement, the Prosecutor said it regrets the state of affairs, stressing that there have never been indications that people were in immediate danger. Nevertheless, dozens of employees of the wholesaler are terrified of reprisals from the criminal underworld, RTL Nieuws reports.
