Dutch Prime Minister expected to apologize to Moluccan community at monument unveiling

Prime Minister Rob Jetten is scheduled to speak on Sunday at the unveiling of a national monument dedicated to the Moluccan community in Rotterdam, his office has confirmed. The announcement follows reports by NOS and RTL Nieuws, which suggested that the occasion could include a formal apology to the Moluccan community. A spokesperson for Jetten would not comment on what the prime minister plans to say.

Thousands of Moluccan former soldiers of the Dutch colonial army and their relatives arrived in the Netherlands in 1951 after being transferred from the former Dutch East Indies. They were initially told that their stay would be temporary, but many remained in the country permanently.

Upon arrival, many families were housed in difficult and often isolated conditions, a situation that has remained a source of grievance within the Moluccan community for decades.

The sense of disappointment and injustice within the Moluccan community sparked decades of protests over the Dutch government's treatment of Moluccan families. Tensions eventually escalated in the 1970s, when a number of radicalised Moluccan youths carried out high-profile hostage-taking incidents that drew national attention.

Almost the entire Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, is calling on the government to come up with an “appropriate gesture” towards the Moluccan community in the Netherlands. Jetten said the Cabinet intends to give the proposal serious consideration. “The call also aligns with discussions we are having as a government with various representatives of the Moluccan community,” he added.

The Tweede Kamer voted in favor of a proposal by Don Ceder of the ChristenUnie that calls on the government, among other things, to commission an independent investigation into the history of the Moluccan community in the Netherlands.

The aim of the study is to “arrive at a process of recognition and an appropriate gesture that does justice to the community and strengthens it,” the motion states. It has been signed by all parliamentary parties except those of PVV, FVD, and Mona Keijzer.
