Google update allows readers to prioritize NL Times in search results

The way international audiences access news about the Netherlands is changing due to a significant update in how search results are displayed. Google users now have the opportunity to manually select NL Times as a Preferred Source to keep receiving consistent reporting on local and national events. The Preferred Sources feature is now available in the Netherlands, letting readers curate a personal news feed without solely relying on unpredictable algorithms.

NL Times reaches hundreds of thousands of people every month through direct traffic to the website, and many more through social media, search traffic, and channels like Google Discover. As the largest English language news source in the Netherlands, the publication serves as a vital link for immigrants, international professionals, expats, foreign students, and global readers who want accurate reporting on Dutch news.

How to follow NL Times on Google

  • Navigate to the Google Preferred Sources page or select the starred folder icon located next to the top stories heading on a search results page.
  • Use the search bar on the preference page to find NL Times among the list of available news organizations.
  • Select the checkbox next to the publication name to add it to your list of prioritized sources.
  • Refresh your browser window to see articles from the publication appear more frequently in your customized news modules.

Other ways to follow NL Times

These steps make it possible to receive the latest updates on Dutch politics, business, and culture from a dedicated English language newsroom, and skip shady results from inconsistent automated feeds, and sloppy AI-generated summaries. And of course, if you do not use Google News, or other Google products, you can still find NL Times on Facebook, Instagram, X, BlueSky, Threads, and LinkedIn.

You can also quickly and easily sign up for the re-launch of the NL Times daily newsletter, which we plan to begin sending out in the coming months.

Understanding the Preferred Sources tool

The simple adjustment in user settings means readers' favorite websites are displayed more prominently and more consistently. Google introduced the Preferred Sources feature to help users stay connected with the publications they trust most. When a search query is entered, the search engine typically provides a summary of reporting from various outlets, but this tool tells Google ahead of time to highlight information from specific newsrooms.

Preferred Sources are given priority in the Top Stories section of search results. In many cases, users will also see a dedicated section, titled From Your Sources, on their search results pages. These news sources will remain easily discoverable whenever a user explores current events, investigative stories, and breaking updates.
