Former home of 17th century Admiral Michiel de Ruyter for sale in Zeeland for €589,000

The former home of the 17th-century Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter in Vlissingen is for sale. The four-story house in the heart of the Zeeland port city is listed for €589,000. It is the first time the property has been on the market in over 50 years, Omroep Zeeland reported.

The national monument is located at Nieuwstraat 13 in the center of Vlissingen. It is unknown whether De Ruyter was the home’s first resident, but it is certain that he lived there in the mid-17th century. The proof of ownership is in the city archives.

“It’s a very special building,” former city archivist Ad Tramper told the broadcaster. “It’s the only house in Zeeland where we know for sure that he lived.”

The building is no longer in its original state. It was almost completely demolished in the 1970s and rebuilt in the original style using the original materials, city archivist Tramper said. “It therefore has monument status.”

Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter (1607-1676) was commander-in-chief of the Netherlands’ fleet early in the Dutch colonial era. He is known for winning many naval battles against the English and French and was renowned for his strategic insights.
