Video: Driver fleeing police hits cyclist and pedestrian in Amsterdam; Suspect arrested
An Amsterdam motorist fleeing police struck two people—a cyclist and a pedestrian—during a late-night chase through the city center and Amsterdam-Oost on Friday, according to local broadcaster AT5 and police. One victim was taken to a hospital, and the driver, who was alone in the car, was arrested after the pursuit ended in Amsterdam-Oost.
The police pursuit began in the centrum around 9:45 p.m., when officers attempted to stop the driver for a traffic violation, police said. The motorist ignored the stop signal and sped away, prompting a chase through the Centrum and Oost involving multiple police vehicles with flashing lights and sirens.
During the pursuit, two people were struck at separate locations in Oost. On the Zeeburgerdijk and later on the Molukkenstraat, the victims were hit, and a police spokesperson said it is presumed they were struck by the fleeing vehicle.
Ambulance personnel examined one of the victims, a cyclist, at the scene. The other victim, identified to AT5 by a tipster as a pedestrian, was transported to a hospital for further treatment. The person’s condition was not immediately known.
The chase ended on the Eikenweg, also in Oost, where police arrested the driver. Authorities said the suspect was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Police have not released any more details yet.
