Icy cold and dry weekend ahead; Rain, higher temps next week

After an extremely snowy week, the Netherlands will see a completely different side of winter this weekend. No snow or rain is expected for most of Saturday and Sunday, and it will be exceptionally cold, according to Weeronline. From Monday, temperatures will be higher, and there will be lots of rain.

This afternoon, there will be rain across much of the country. Colder air will move in from the north, gradually turning the rain to snow in more and more places. By late afternoon, temperatures will be around 1 to 3 degrees Celsius. Light snow will fall in most places, continuing overnight. Many places will see 2 to 5 centimeters of fresh snow.

“So there’s a good chance you’ll wake up to a fresh layer of snow on Saturday,” Weeronline meteorologist Matthijs van der Linden said. Early risers may even still see some snowflakes on Saturday morning, but the day will gradually turn dry everywhere. There will be sunny spells, but also some cloud cover.

Maximums will range between freezing in the west and southwest, and between 1 to 3 degrees Celsius inland. “The northeasterly wind will make it feel much colder. The wind chill will range from -2 degrees in the southwest to -10 degrees in the northeast.”

Sunday will be sunny, dry, and even colder, with a moderate southeasterly wind bringing in cold air. “Temperatures will remain below freezing for much of the day, but later on, the mercury will rise slightly from the west,” Van der Linden said. “Temperatures will continue to rise in the evening, and precipitation is possible.”

Monday will see clouds and precipitation, initially in the form of wet snow, but this will quickly turn to rain. A moderate southerly wind will blow. Maximums will climb to between 3 degrees on the coast and 7 degrees in the southwest, quickly melting away whatever snow survived the weekend.

“The rest of the week will remain unsettled, with a high chance of rain daily. Temperatures will rise to 5 or 6 degrees Celsius in the east and 7 or 8 degrees Celsius in the west. Nighttime temperatures may occasionally drop to around freezing,” Weeronline said.
