Another setback for struggling Feyenoord with KNVB Cup loss to Heerenveen at home

Feyenoord’s difficult end to the first half of the season took another painful turn with a 2–3 home defeat against sc Heerenveen, a result that eliminated the Rotterdam club from the KNVB Cup. It was the seventh loss in nine matches for the team coached by Robin van Persie.

Results under Van Persie have dipped compared to those achieved by former coach Brian Priske, who was dismissed earlier. Feyenoord remain second in the Eredivisie but trail leaders PSV by nine points, while their Europa League campaign is effectively over. Despite an injury-ravaged squad, Feyenoord twice showed fighting spirit by clawing their way back into the match, only to see Jacob Trenskow score the decisive goal in the final minute.

Luciano Valente’s return to the starting lineup offered a rare bright spot. The midfielder, who had been forced off injured against Ajax days earlier, immediately asserted himself by demanding possession and dictating play. His sharp distribution gave Feyenoord early control, but it was Heerenveen who struck first. Dylan Vente punished his former club midway through the first half, finishing a move started by Ringo Meerveld past goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

With Sliti and Sauer struggling to make an impact out wide, Feyenoord had difficulty supplying Ayase Ueda. Van Persie’s options were limited by injuries to several first-team players, while three others were unavailable due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Changes after the break injected some energy. Borges, introduced at halftime, helped create the equalizer just after the hour mark, with Valente converting after an initial save. However, a defensive lapse allowed Maxence Rivera to restore Heerenveen’s lead, and although an own goal briefly made it 2–2, Feyenoord were undone once more by Trenskow late on.

The final whistle was met with visible frustration from the stands, prompting both Bijlow and Van Persie to address the angry supporters following another damaging defeat.
