New Dutch platform connects traffic accident victims and bystanders

People involved in traffic accidents in the Netherlands can now connect with one another through a new platform launched by Slachtofferhulp Nederland (Victim Support Netherlands).

The website, “You Were There Too,” is launching Sunday in response to requests from victims and bystanders seeking to connect—sometimes to say thank you or to discuss something.

Both the police and Slachtofferhulp regularly receive such requests from victims and witnesses, but privacy laws often prevent sharing personal information, even when it is available.

"Someone who has been in a collision often doesn’t remember exactly what happened," said Marjoke Aantjes, team leader at Slachtofferhulp Nederland. "If other people can piece together the details and make the picture more complete, it helps with recovery."

Last year, the Netherlands recorded more than 126,000 traffic accidents, according to Rijkswaterstaat. The Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research (SWOV) reported 675 deaths and at least 7,000 serious injuries.

Because the impact of such accidents can be significant, the Dutch Road Victims Association sees value in the new platform. "Stories and support from others are essential for your recovery," said chairperson Nelly Vollebregt.
