Amsterdam Mayor condemns male protesters who called her a "whore," harassed women

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema condemned the behavior of demonstrators during an anti-immigration protest on October 12, in which protesters shouted offensive remarks at women and local residents who opposed the march. The mayor herself was called a “whore” by the demonstrators.

“We had an anti-immigration protest in Amsterdam, which received a lot of national attention, and it was predominantly native Dutch men demonstrating,” Halsema said on the television program Buitenhof, according to AT5.

“And there were women on the sidelines protesting against the protest. And they were chanted at, ‘there must be a penis in there.’ These are the men who are supposed to protect us. That does raise a few questions,” she added.

Halsema also described additional insults directed at her personally. “They were shouting from a thousand throats, ‘Halsema is a whore,’” she said. “I don’t know if that is very reassuring for the culture we have in the Netherlands.”
