Air France-KLM finalizes stake purchase in Canada’s WestJet airline
Air France-KLM has finalized the purchase of a partial stake in Canadian airline WestJet, becoming one of three major carriers to acquire shares from investment firm Onex Partners. The transaction, announced in May, has now been completed.
Onex sold a quarter of its WestJet holdings to Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, and Air France-KLM. Delta secured the largest portion with a 15 percent stake, while 2.3 percent of that was later sold to Air France-KLM for 50 million euros. Korean Air purchased 10 percent. Onex Partners remains the majority owner of WestJet.
The investment strengthens existing partnerships between the airlines. Air France-KLM and WestJet already cooperate closely on flights between Europe and Canada, coordinating schedules and expanding passenger connections.
According to Air France-KLM, the transaction underscores its long-term strategy to reinforce transatlantic operations and deepen alliances with North American carriers.
WestJet, based in Calgary, Alberta, continues to operate as a key player in Canada’s aviation sector, now partially owned by three of the world’s leading airlines.
