Authorities arrest human trafficking suspect linked to sex work in Amsterdam and Almere

Authorities arrested a 39-year-old Amsterdam resident on Tuesday on charges of human trafficking, smuggling, and money laundering. The arrest took place at a housing complex on Jan Tooropstraat in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.

Police searching the man’s residence in Amsterdam discovered two Colombian women, aged 26 and 35, who were working there as sex workers. Authorities confiscated phones, data storage devices, and administrative documents. The Rotterdam police led the arrest, working in collaboration with officers from Amsterdam and Almere.

The man came to the attention of the Rotterdam Human Trafficking and Smuggling Team in May, following inspections of several properties in Rotterdam. It was later discovered that he also managed housing in Amsterdam and Almere, where women, primarily from Eastern Europe and South America, were earning money as sex workers.

Alongside a residence and business premises in Amsterdam, authorities also searched a property in Almere, where no sex workers were present.

The police emphasize that sexual exploitation often goes unnoticed and urge the public to stay vigilant. The suspect’s arrest comes ahead of the International Day Against Human Trafficking on Saturday, October 18. In the week leading up to this day, the police are using social media to highlight sexual and criminal exploitation, aiming to raise awareness among clients and encourage reporting of abuses.
