Motorcycle cop killed, civilian hurt in Weesp traffic collision

A 39-year-old police officer was killed in a Tuesday morning traffic crash that left another individual injured. The wounded 56-year-old man was hospitalized, and his condition was not disclosed. He was detained by investigators, according to NH Nieuws.

The plainclothes police officer, who was riding a motorcycle, collided with a car on the N236 in Weesp, Noord-Holland, on a stretch of road known as the Gooilandseweg. The cause of the crash was still under investigation at the end of the afternoon.

The police officer was on duty at the time of the incident. It was not revealed if the officer had activated lights or sirens on the motorcycle as part of an emergency response.

“Bystanders immediately began CPR at the scene, after which emergency services took over,” police said in a statement. Records show more police officers were dispatched to the scene of the accident at about 11:05 a.m., followed by a trauma team traveling by helicopter, firefighters, and several ambulances.

“Unfortunately, the aid was to no avail, and the police officer died at the scene.”

The 56-year-old driver of the car was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. He was placed in custody while the crash was investigated. “That’s common practice in serious accidents,” a police spokesperson told NH Nieuws.

The case is under investigation by a police division specialized in traffic crash analysis. Authorities reopened the N236 later in the afternoon.
