Zuid-Holland municipalities send ID letters to residents with wrong personal data
Several municipalities in the Bollenstreek last week sent dozens of residents letters about renewing their ID cards or passports, which also included personal data belonging to other people. The letters were mistakenly printed double-sided, the municipalities of Lisse, Teylingen, and Hillegom said on Monday. “As a result, a second letter intended for another resident of the municipality appeared on the back. That second letter was therefore delivered to the wrong person,” they explained.
A total of 123 residents in Teylingen received the letter, with 86 people in Lisse receiving it and 68 in Hillegom. The Zuid-Holland municipalities said they deeply regret that the personal data sent was not intended for the recipients. They have reported the data breach to the Dutch Data Protection Authority.
The affected residents have been informed and will soon receive a letter explaining the best steps they can take, according to the three municipalities.
The municipalities have launched an internal investigation to ensure stricter controls are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Officials also reassured residents that there is no evidence that the personal data has been accessed or misused by third parties. They encourage anyone with concerns or questions to contact the municipal offices directly for support and guidance.
