Thousands march in Amsterdam’s Pride Parade celebrating LGBTQ+ rights and diversity
Pride Amsterdam kicked off Saturday with a festive Pride March, as thousands of participants walked from Amstelveld to the Vondelpark, temporarily renamed Pride Park for the event. The march, which began at noon, celebrates diversity and freedom while calling attention to the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, according to Het Parool.
This marks the second consecutive year the event has been held, following a large turnout last year. Once again, the number of participants was significant, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the march. Many attendees wore colorful costumes, and flags from the United States and Palestine were visible among the crowd, Het Parool reported.
After the march concluded at Pride Park, the event continued with a full schedule including a Rainbow Market featuring handmade goods, drag shows, and Sport Pride activities for those seeking physical engagement. The open-air theater hosted performances from artists such as Willeke Alberti, Karin Bloemen, and various DJs. The program also featured a youth drag show judged by Pride ambassador and drag artist Gwen Dalin.
The city recently hosted a separate Pride Walk, which differs from the Pride March in focus. The existence of two marches stems from disagreements between different Amsterdam queer organizations. The Pride Walk allows space for protests addressing a variety of issues, while the Pride March centers exclusively on the voices and rights of the queer community.
