Amsterdam to start developing new neighborhood with 6,200 homes

Amsterdam has taken a major step in developing De Nieuwe Kern, a new neighborhood between Amsterdam and the Zuidoost district, by making funds available for the development of 6,200 homes. According to the city, this lively new neighborhood will be surrounded by parks and will also make Zuidoost more accessible. “We expect the first homes to be ready in 2028,” Amsterdam said.

De Nieuwe Kern is one of the largest housing projects in Amsterdam. “We are turning De Nieuwe Kern into a pleasant and lively neighborhood with a mix of homes, facilities such as shops, play and sports areas, and greenery,” the city said. “We want to turn it into a real urban district, comparable to the Berlagebuurt, with various parks around it.”

The homes in De Nieuwe Kern will consist of 30 percent social housing, 40 percent mid-market rentals, and 30 percent owner-occupied homes in the private sector.

The development of the new neighborhood will also improve access to Amsterdam Zuidoost, with new cycling and walking routes and improved infrastructure.

The new neighborhood will be developed on land owned by the municipality of Ouder-Amstel, and plans were developed in close collaboration with that municipality, Amsterdam said.
