Organizations make changes to sporting events this weekend due to warm temperatures

Organizations in various municipalities have altered their plans for running events this weekend due to the warm weather. The routes have been made shorter in Roosendaal, and the competitive element has been removed from the event. Because of this, finishing times will not be recorded, and there will be no awards ceremony for the winners. The marathon in Oss has been changed to a half-marathon.

The organization in Roosendaal decided to continue with the event, as the weather in the southwest on Sunday will be less warm than previously expected. “And the aid workers are close together with the shorter routes,” said Rens van den Oever, part of the organization for the Halve Marathon Roosendaal. The starting times will be a little later than previously planned.

The IRONMAN Westfriesland, a long-distance triathlon that takes place in Hoorn on Sunday, will also be proceeding. The children’s version of this event, the Kids of Iron, has been canceled. A spokesperson for the municipality has said that the heat protocol for the event is in order. “People can drink a lot more water during the route, and when they are finished, there are ice baths ready for them to use. This will help them cool themselves down.” There will also be sports doctors by the route keeping an eye on the participants.

Events that were scheduled to take place on Saturday, including the Mar-athon Sneek, the TT City Run, and the TT Marathon in Assen, have been canceled. The Bike Run in Deurningen that was scheduled for Friday is also canceled.

Overconfidence is a major pitfall among athletes, and they often underestimate the dangers of heat, the Red Cross warned. The organization is calling on people to use their “common sense” and for people to listen to their bodies.

Festival goers have also been warned to watch the warm temperatures. One example is people attending the festival Op de Ring on the motorway in Amsterdam being told not to wear slippers on the hot asphalt roads.

People visiting Pinkpop have also been told to keep an eye on their hydration, use sunscreen, and suitable clothing, like a baseball cap or a hat. And everyone is warned to stay in the shadows as much as possible.

Other events have also altered their program to protect participants against the warm weather. Veterans Day in Droogdok Jan Blanken in the municipality of Voorne aan Zee will be ending earlier than first planned. Crowds planning on attending the Dag van de Bouw event have been warned to hydrate plenty and to use sunscreen lotion.
