Concerns regarding finances within the Dutch gaming industry despite record turnover

The Dutch gaming industry recorded record turnover between 2021 and 2023, the Dutch Games Association (DGA) reported based on recent numbers. There was also a slight increase in the number of companies. Despite these positive results, there is also concern within the sector. According to DGA, this is partly due to the “global malaise” that the gaming industry finds itself in.

The gaming industry in the Netherlands recorded a turnover of 763 million euros between 2021 and 2023. This is a 10.5 percent increase compared to the three years that came before this period.

Most of the Dutch gaming companies develop games for the PC and online, the DGA reported. In addition, so-called applied or serious games form an important part of the sector. These are games with a purpose other than entertainment, for example, for healthcare institutions or the police.

The number of gaming companies in the Netherlands rose slightly to 614. In total, just under 4,300 people were employed at these companies at the end of 2023, which is a decrease of 269.

Although the drop had nothing to do with jobs being cut, the DGA noted. Various companies expanded their services, which meant that they were no longer categorized under the definition of a gaming company.

Despite the positive results, there is an increasing amount of concern within the Dutch gaming industry. A survey of companies shows that approximately 57 percent think that their company is doing well. This is a significant decrease compared to three years ago when 78 percent felt the company they worked at was doing well.

Around 22 percent said that they feel their company is in a good place for the future. This is also a significant decrease, as half of the people asked three years earlier had stated this.

Many gaming studios around the world are struggling to get financing, which has led to projects being delayed. Some projects continue in a smaller form, and some are canceled.

This is not just an issue for the smaller gaming companies but also something affecting the larger companies. Dutch companies like Ronimo Games and Paladin Studios have been hit with financial issues lately. Ronimo was declared bankrupt as a result, and Paladin Studios shut its doors earlier this month due to financial insecurity.
