Driver runs red light in Tilburg, critically injures two teen cyclists

Two teenagers, ages 15 and 18, were critically injured Friday afternoon after being struck by a car while crossing the Ringbaan-Zuid in Tilburg, Omroep Brabant reported. The 21-year-old driver, who ran a red light, was arrested at the scene, police said.

Eyewitnesses told Omroep Brabant that the 18-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl were waiting on their bicycles at a traffic light when the signal turned green. As they began crossing, the pair was immediately hit by a car that ignored the red light. The impact violently threw both teens through the air.

Bystanders rushed to help the victims before emergency responders arrived. Both teenagers suffered severe injuries and were transported to the hospital urgently, authorities said.

The crash occurred in broad daylight on the busy Ringbaan-Zuid roadway. According to police, the driver told officers that he had been distracted by the settings of his vehicle and failed to notice the red traffic light.
