Jumbo recalls chicken gyros salad over missing mustard allergen warning

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has issued an immediate recall of its chicken gyros ready-to-eat salad after a labeling error was discovered that could endanger consumers with mustard allergies. The recall applies specifically to the Jumbo Maaltijdsalade Kip Gyros with a “best before” date of May 5, 2025.

In a statement released on Friday, the company said the product label does not indicate that mustard may be present in the salad, even though it could be. Jumbo confirmed that mustard, which is a known allergen, was omitted from the ingredients list. The company also acknowledged that the product lacks a standard allergy warning advising consumers that the salad may contain traces of several types of nuts and sesame. These include peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts, and sesame seeds.

“This can pose a danger to individuals with an allergy to mustard,” Jumbo said in its official announcement. The company is urging customers who are allergic to mustard not to consume the salad and to return it to any Jumbo store for a full refund. Customers do not need to present a receipt to receive their money back.

The affected product can be identified by its brand name, Jumbo Maaltijdsalade Kip Gyros, and the EAN code 8718452902378. The recall applies only to items marked with a “best before” date of May 5, 2025. Jumbo said the product was sold in stores and online via Jumbo.com.

According to the company, individuals who are not allergic to mustard can consume the product safely. Jumbo offered an apology for the incident and encouraged customers seeking additional information to contact its customer service by phone or visit Jumbo.com. “We apologize for the inconvenience,” the company said.
