Man, 25, passes away after suffering from heat stroke during Enschede Marathon
A 25-year-old man from Rijssen passed away on Thursday after he had become unwell during the Enschede Marathon, Tubantia reported. The man completed the half marathon on Sunday before collapsing after the finish line due to heart issues, which came as a result of a heat stroke.
The heart issues led to him being resuscitated after the finish and then slipping into a coma for four days, RTV Oost reported.
Sandra Melief, a director for the Enschede Marathon, was shocked by the news. “Horrible. We were hoping for a positive outcome for days.” She added that the organization was deeply affected by the news. “Incredibly sad, so young. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.”
The organization would not release any more information about the man due to privacy reasons.
This was the 55th edition of the Enschede Marathon. It is the oldest marathon in the country. Around 18,000 people participated in the running event.
It was reported last week that a doctor had warned runners and members of the crowd in the Rotterdam Marathon, which also took place last weekend, to watch out for signs of heat stroke in participants.
