Number of Syrians who chose to return to the country in March almost double of February

The number of Syrians who have returned to their homeland on their own initiative has increased rapidly. The number of people who returned to Syria in March was almost as many as in January and February combined. This has come forth from statistics provided by the Dutch Repatriation and Departure Service (DTenV).

The service registered 130 Syrians who returned to their country of their own accord in January and February. In March, 120 Syrians left the Netherlands to return to the country. It is possible that these 250 people are not all returnees, as people can also leave without reporting this to the DT&V.

Rebels ousted the dictator Bashar al-Assad in December in Syria. This happened under the regime of the current president, Ahmed al-Sharaa. Before the fall of Assad’s regime, people rarely returned to Syria.

Anybody who would like to return now can be aided with this by the DT&V. The service organizes a plane ticket and also gives the people 900 euros in cash.
