More bulb flower cultivation in the Netherlands; Tulips most popular

More and more tulips, lilies, hyacinths, and other flowers are being grown in the Netherlands. The space that is being used to do this has grown by 16 percent in the last ten years. This was reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Tulips are the most popular by a distance. Almost half of all flower bulb soil is used for this purpose.

The largest part of the flower bulbs that are grown in the Netherlands are sent abroad. Over a a billion euros worth of bulbs went over the border in 2023. This is almost 30 percent more than in 2015.

The region where the Bollenstreek is located in the western part of the country grows the most flower bulbs in proportion. In most of the fields, there are growing daffodils, hyacinths, and dahlias. There are also many bulb fields in the IJsselmeerpolders region - with the Kop van Noord-Holland and the Noordoostpolder as flower centers. Here, you will mainly find tulips.

Flower bulbs have grown increased nationally over the last few years, but they vary at the regional level. In the areas north of Amsterdam, there has been a reduction of 20 percent in the ground being used for flower growing since 2019. However, there was an increase of 20 percent regarding this in the Hollands/Utrecht field area, a region that extends from Gorinchem to Hilversum.

There are around 1,600 bulb growers active in the Netherlands, and they have seen their turnover increase over the past ten years. The average flower grower had a turnover of 1.3 million euros last year. In 2014, this was around 1 million euros, according to figures collected by Wageningen University.
