Video: Sewage comes pouring into Delft university building

A burst sewer pipe sent a waterfall of sewage streaming into a building of the Delft University of Technology on Tuesday. The sludge flowed into the corridors of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences for around 15 minutes, leaving a “carpet of shit,” as students describe the situation on social media.

A sewage pipe on the first floor broke at around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As a result, the pipes connected to the toilets on the second floor and above emptied through the ceiling and onto the ground floor, a spokesperson for the faculty told AD. “It smelled unpleasant,” she said, calling that a massive understatement.

The faculty immediately closed off the toilets so that they couldn’t be used and called in a plumber. “Fortunately, we were able to start cleaning fairly quickly,” the spokesperson said.

Apart from the smell, the burst sewer pipe did not cause much trouble. “Lectures could continue as usual, and there are no workplaces nearby. The student association has a loft that looks out directly onto it. We closed that part off due to the smell,” the spokesperson said.
