Netherlands open to Ukraine peacekeeping role, Schoof says

The Netherlands is willing to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if an agreement with Russia is reached, Prime Minister Dick Schoof said Saturday. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Schoof stressed Europe’s role in ensuring stability. "We understand that as Europe, we have a responsibility here," he said.

Schoof also addressed a speech by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who on Friday criticized European democracy. "I am surprised by the harsh tone," Schoof said. He acknowledged the strong backlash in Germany, where Vance’s remarks sparked controversy.

Vance’s speech, delivered ahead of a key German election, was widely criticized for appearing to support far-right groups. Critics accused him of interfering in German politics and questioning the long-standing alliance between the U.S. and Europe.

Schoof defended European democracy and expressed concern over the U.S. stance. "I fully understand the German frustration," he said.
