Dutch drivers headed to Austria for winter sports warned of potential toll road fines

Dutch people traveling to Austria for winter sports should look for the toll rules on the motorways in the country. Most are aware that almost all A- and S- roads require a toll sticker. What people are less aware of is that this toll sticker does not apply to certain tunnels, including the Karawankentunnel and the Brennerautobahn. Separate tolls must be paid for these ”Sondermautstrecken,” the ANWB warned.

The travel association has received dozens of reports from people who traveled to Austria and were surprised when they returned home with a fine of 120 euros for a “toll violation”.

Anyone who wants to avoid such a fine can pay the toll of a “Sondermautstrecke” online in advance or take the toll gate with the green strip at the toll booth.

The roads that require a separate toll fee are the A9, A10, A11, A13, and S16. The options for payment are sticking the toll sticker on the windshield or registering online and connecting the car’s license plate.

ANWB also warned drivers to keep an eye on the fact that they are using the right toll lane in the country. Automatic toll ports can only be used if the fees have already been paid in advance.

The one-week February school holiday period kicks off in the northern region after classrooms end for the day on February 14. The central and southern school regions begin their holiday a week later.
