Over half a million fewer traffic fines issued in 2024 than the previous year

There were over half a million fewer traffic fines issued in 2024 than in 2023, numbers provided by the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) show. Over 7.9 million fines were handed out which is a lot fewer than 2023 when 8.5 million fines were issued.

The Ministry of Justice and Security have stated that one of the reasons for the reduction is the protests by police earlier this year. Police officers issued less fines in protest for a better collective bargaining agreement. The replacement of fixed speed trap camera’s, meaning that they are no longer active, is also one of the reasons for the reduction. Police have also been focussing on more severe traffic violations.

Most of the fines were issued for speeding violations. Almost six million fines were issued for this offense, compared to 6.5 million fines in 2023. Most speeding related fines were issued for driving four kilometers too fast within the residential areas, this added up to 463,000 fines last year.

Another noticeable statistic was an increase in people who were fined for ignoring a no entry sign. Almost 300,000 fines were issued to people who drove on a road or area where they are not allowed. Examples of this are environmental areas or car-free city centers. Around 147,000 fines were issued for this type of offense in 2023.

Fewer fines were issued for driving through a red light than the previous year, 214,963 in 2024 compared to 233,512, in 2023. There was also a decrease in the number of fines issued for holding a phone while driving (165,408 times compared to 198,841). Almost 8,300 fines were issued for ignoring a sign with a red cross on it, this is more than in 2023 when 7,200 fines were issued for this offense.

The speed trap which caught the most offenses was the camera on the A16 by the node Terbregseplein in Rotterdam. There were over 111,000 fines issued for speeding due to the speed trap. This trap was placed there due to construction, which meant that the maximum speed was lowered to 70 kilometers per hour.

A speed trap on the N207 by Alphen aan de Rijn followed this with 49,000 fines issued for speeding there and a speed trap on the N207 in the municipality of Kaag en Braassem with around 44,000 fines.
