Video: Two hurt in fire in Drenthe village
Two people were injured in a house fire in the Drenthe village of Valthermond on Monday evening. One was found inside the burning home with “significant injuries,” a spokesperson for Veiligheidsregio Drenthe, the office covering the local emergency services, told NOS. The other victim was found outside with less severe injuries.
The fire broke out in the home on Zuiderdiep in the early evening and several fire brigade units in the region responded, escalating the situation to a “large fire.” They managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent homes.
Firefighters found the seriously injured person inside the burning house. They only managed to remove him from the building and rush him to a hospital about an hour after they first arrived at the scene. The victim was too close to the fire and the firefighters couldn’t reach them any earlier, the Veiligheidsregio spokesperson told the broadcaster.
The second injured person was found outside some time later, a spokesperson for the Veiligheidsregio told ANP. They had sustained burns and emergency services took them to the hospital for treatment. It is unclear whether this person was inside when the fire started.
Several explosions were heard before the fire broke out, leading the fire brigade to suspect that there were fireworks in the home. This is still under investigation.
