Major fire in Goes warehouse rekindles amid changing winds

A large fire at a warehouse on Pearyweg in Goes reignited early Sunday morning, spreading thick smoke across the area and prompting safety warnings. The fire, which began late Saturday afternoon, has kept firefighters occupied for more than 24 hours as changing wind conditions exacerbated the situation.

The flames, which initially seemed under control late Saturday, flared up again as the wind shifted direction overnight. Smoke from the fire is now drifting toward the Zeelandbrug and remains visible from a distance.

Toxic smoke concerns

Authorities have warned residents to avoid exposure to the smoke. “All smoke is toxic, and you should stay out of it,” said a spokesperson for the Zeeland Safety Region. Continuous air quality monitoring has shown no elevated levels of harmful substances at ground level, where people and animals live.

Firefighters remain on-site, using multiple units and extensive equipment to manage the situation. Despite their efforts, access to the interior of the warehouse remains challenging due to structural damage caused by the fire.

By Saturday evening, the dense smoke had spread over the A58 motorway, making conditions too hazardous for crews to enter the warehouse. Instead, unmanned water cannons were deployed to cool the building’s exterior, while a firefighting robot was sent inside to assess the damage. However, the robot’s progress was hindered by collapsed shelving, limiting its effectiveness.

The warehouse is reported to be a large industrial facility, though no injuries have been reported so far. Authorities have sealed off the surrounding area as a precaution. Air quality monitoring and public safety remain priorities as the situation develops.
