Code yellow warning ends; Maas river levels surge amid heavy rain

The nationwide code yellow warning for icy conditions has been lifted, while in Limburg, the Maas River is experiencing higher water levels due to heavy rain and melting snow.

The KNMI announced that the code yellow alert had ended as rain replaced snow and icy roads became less hazardous. The Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) said it had spread nearly 8.5 million kilograms of salt on highways since Saturday evening to improve road safety.

Meanwhile, in Roermond, Waterschap Limburg reported that the Maas River is carrying more water than usual, with rising levels also observed in its tributaries and streams. The water authority attributed the increase to persistent rain in Limburg and Belgium, coupled with snowmelt from the Ardennes.

"We do not anticipate major problems, but we remain on high alert," a spokesperson for Waterschap Limburg said. The agency is monitoring water levels, runoff, and weather forecasts closely. "If needed, additional measures will be taken," the spokesperson added.
