Valkenburg increases security following German Christmas market attack

Mayor Daan Prevoo of Valkenburg, home to one of Europe's busiest Christmas markets, expressed alarm following a suspected attack in Magdeburg, Germany, which left five dead and dozens injured. “I was shocked by the events in Magdeburg,” Prevoo said. “I immediately met with police and municipal services Friday evening.”

Security at Valkenburg’s market, which attracts 700,000 visitors annually, was already heightened. Prevoo declared the site a security risk area when the event opened on Nov. 15. Concrete barriers block access roads, drones monitor from above, and visible and covert patrols are active.

Arnhem and The Hague, hosting other popular markets, declined to discuss additional measures. Arnhem Mayor Ahmed Marcouch’s office emphasized adherence to national threat level 4, but no further details were provided. Maastricht officials also confirmed discussions with the Magical Maastricht market organizers but withheld specifics, citing unchanged national threat levels.

The responsibility for on-site measures remains with event organizers, authorities added.
