GPs report 75% surge in youth seeking help for suicidal thoughts, attempts
Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.
General practitioners in the Netherlands report a sharp increase in the number of young people seeking help for suicidal thoughts or attempts. In the third quarter of 2024, consultations for these issues among individuals aged 0 to 24 were 75 percent higher compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to new research by organizations including the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and ARQ National Psychotrauma Center.
This marks a significant rise from the second quarter of 2024, when such consultations were 45 percent higher than pre-pandemic levels. On average, GPs saw seven young patients per week per 100,000 for reasons related to suicidal ideation or attempts, researchers noted.
While the number of GP visits linked to suicidality has risen, the percentage of young people reporting suicidal thoughts in surveys has remained stable between the second and third quarters at 13 percent. This is still substantially higher than before the pandemic, according to the Network for Health Research in Disasters (GOR), which conducts quarterly studies.
“A possible explanation is that more young people are seeking help without a corresponding increase in the prevalence of suicidal thoughts,” the RIVM stated.
The study did not explore specific reasons for the increase in GP visits related to suicidality. Researchers emphasize that the findings highlight a persistent post-pandemic trend of heightened mental health concerns among youth.
The data underscores the importance of intervention by primary care providers. Stichting 113 Suicide Prevention offers 24/7 anonymous online and phone support for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and their families. GPs are encouraged to identify and address these issues during consultations, with resources available for handling such cases effectively.
Schools and universities are also urged to play a proactive role. Guidance for educational institutions on addressing suicidality is accessible through specialized suicide prevention programs.
