NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt may return to Parliament next Tuesday
After the fiasco on Friday when NSC State Secretary Nora Achahbar resigned due to racist statements by Cabinet members, throwing the NSC party and the entire Schoof Cabinet into chaos, a seat in the NSC may soon be filled again, namely by Pieter Omtzigt.
The NSC leader may return to the Tweede Kamer as early as next Tuesday, the party announced to Nieuwsuur. Omtzigt wants to fulfill his duties as party leader as soon as possible in order to get the NSC back on track, reports NOS.
Around two months ago, Omtizgt announced that he would be retiring from politics for the foreseeable future and would be working more in the background for health reasons. “The past year has been very intense and this means that, for health reasons, I will be working more in the background in the coming weeks and will be less in the spotlight for a while,” he said.
However, he has not been replaced by the party in the meantime, so the NSC with its 20 seats in the lower house of Dutch parliament had one seat less during the elections. According to NOS, the NSC party leader was always in close contact with his party colleagues in the background.
During his absence, MP Nicolien van Vroonhoven temporarily took over the seat as party leader. The impact Omtzigt's return will have on the NSC and what Vroonhoven's future position and duties within the party will be remains to be seen.
