Dutch people cycle more often and for further distances
Dutch people are traveling more often by bicycle and for a longer period of time. A total of 19.1 billion kilometers was cycled in 2023, which is an average of 1,065 kilometers per person. The average kilometers per person cycled ten years ago was 902 kilometers.
The increase in the number of kilometers is connected to the growth of the number of electric bicycles, according to travel organizations RAI and BOVAG.
Around 56 percent of the 804,000 new bicycles that were purchased last year were e-bikes. The Netherlands sells the most electric bicycles in Europe, along with France and Germany.
The number of bicycles, mopeds, scooters, and motors in our country has continued to grow steadily. The 800,000th motorcycle was registered in 2023, which means that there have never been so many motorcycles in the Netherlands.
Younger people have especially shown an increased interest in driving a motorcycle. The sales of new motorcycles in the age category of 18-25 rose by 30 percent.
