Hospital workers deliver healthy quadruplets at Radboud UMC in Nijmegen

An extensive team of healthcare workers helped a mother deliver quadruplets at the Radboud UMC in Nijmegen this week. The mother and babies are doing well, the hospital explained in a LinkedIn post.

Delivering quadruplets requires meticulous coordination among medical staff. “Colleagues from various departments were on standby in the operating room. At least one doctor and one nurse are needed for each baby, along with anesthetists, operating room assistants, an anesthesiologist, and a gynecologist,” the hospital stated.

Due to space constraints, an adjacent operating room was converted into a reception area. Four nurses stood ready to receive the infants, each wearing a numbered cap to indicate which baby they would care for. Fortunately, everything went smoothly during the delivery.

They were joined by Leontien, a midwife who works in a Nijmegen practice. She noted the rarity of such an event in a comment released by the hospital.

"I have been in this profession for years, but I have never encountered quadruplets before." She highlighted the increased risks involved with multiple births for both the mother and the babies.

"You are more likely to be induced, and after your intake appointment with a midwifery practice, you are always referred to the hospital. We typically see parents of multiples just once or twice before the hospital takes over."
