Giant panda cub born at Ouwehands Zoo in July named after Rembrandt

The giant panda cub born at Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen over the summer was given a name 100 days after the birth, in accordance with Chinese tradition. The animal, whose gender is not yet known, has been given the name Lang Yue after an online competition.

Lang is based on the Chinese pronunciation of the first name of Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Lang also translates to "hope, light and wisdom". Yue means “moon” and is often used in China to indicate the longing for family.

Born in July, the cub has an older sister named Fan Xing. Her name, Fan, being given in honor of Vincent van Gogh.

Lang Yue's gender will be determined soon. That can only be done when mother Wu Wen and the young cub emerge from the maternity den.

Visitors at the Rhenen zoo will not be able to view Lang Yue until next year.
