Student housing shortage increasing in most cities

The Netherlands has a major shortage of student rooms, and it will only get worse in the coming years, warned real estate advisor CBRE. According to the company, the number of plans for student housing in the “pipeline” must be doubled “to eliminate the shortages in student housing.”

CBRE said that many students live in regular rental properties. These are not specifically intended for students. The consultancy expects that they’ll also disappear from the rental market in the long term due to tax measures.

Students will then have to find accommodation elsewhere, but there won’t be enough student rooms to accommodate them. As a result, “the housing situation in most student cities will worsen in the coming years,” said CBRE.

The company expects major problems in the short term in well-known student cities like Groningen, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Tilburg, but also in smaller cities such as Zwolle, Haarlem, and Den Bosch.
