Police shoot man to stop stabbing in Weert; Two hurt in stabbing in The Hague
A patrolling police officer in Weert shot a man to prevent him from stabbing another person on Nieuwe Markt on Thursday evening. The suspect was taken to hospital with a non-life-threatening bullet wound. In The Hague, two people got hurt in a stabbing on Stationsweg.
The police officer was patrolling on Nieuwe Markt at around 8:40 p.m. on Thursday when a person approached him for help. While talking to the police officer, two men walked up and attacked the person. One pushed the victim, and the other started stabbing them with an object.
“The officer tried to separate them but failed,” the police said. “Since the suspect did not stop stabbing the person seeking help, the police officer was forced to shoot.” One suspect got hurt. The second suspect fled, with the victim giving chase.
The injured suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment. The police are looking for the second suspect - a man with tanned skin and wearing a dark skirt. The victim has been found. It is unclear whether they were injured.
The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at the police and other government services, will investigate the shooting. This is standard procedure any time a police officer fires their gun.
In The Hague, two people got hurt in a stabbing on Stationsweg at around 9:30 p.m. Paramedics treated the victims at the scene before rushing them to a hospital, a police spokesperson told Omroep West.
The police are looking for the perpetrator. “The investigation is still in full swing,” the police spokesperson said. They couldn’t say anything about the identity of the victims or the circumstances of the stabbing.
