Feyenoord win the Johan Cruijff Schaal on penalties after spectacular 4-4 draw with PSV
Feyenoord won the Johan Cruijff Schaal in the Philips stadium in Eindhoven on Sunday. The Rotterdammers beat PSV on penalties after a spectacular 4-4 draw in 90 minutes. Goals were scored by Luuk de Jong, Santiago Gimenez, Guus Til, Noa Lang, Antoni Milombo, and Bart Nieuwkoop.
An interesting pre-match decision from new Feyenoord manager Brian Priske was picking Timon Wellenreuther in goal. This seems to be his first-choice goalkeeper for the Rotterdammers this season instead of Justin Bijlow.
The first chance of the match went to Feyenoord. Igor Paixao used an excellent first touch to gain space for a shot, which was knocked wide for a corner by PSV keeper Walter Benitez.
The Eindhoven side took the lead in the ninth minute. Feyenoord had stopped playing for a second because midfielder Ramiz Zerrouki lay on the floor hurt, but PSV kept playing. It resulted in Noa Lang side-footing home after Johan Bakayoko had played him in.
In the 26th minute, Feyenoord was awarded a penalty to level the match. Gjivai Zechiël dribbled into the box before being kicked by Fredrik Oppegård. Santiago Gimenez took the penalty and scored it.
The match was shortly halted after the goal due to fights between PSV fans and Feyenoord fans, who had celebrated the goal while sitting in the PSV section. This led to PSV fans from other areas of the stadium trying to get involved, who were then quickly yelled at by captain Luuk de Jong.
Priske’s side took the lead shortly after the restart. Santiago Gimenez dribbled past Ryan Flamingo before playing a perfect pass across the box to Bart Nieuwkoop, who had come forward from the right wing-back position. Nieuwkoop finished the chance to send the 1,600 traveling Feyenoord fans into celebrations.
Feyenoord missed a huge opportunity just before halftime to make it 3-1. Nieuwkoop met a low cross from David Hancko at the back post, who slid it towards goal. Benitez saved this opportunity, and incredibly, he got up to also save the subsequent shot from Paixao. The Brazilian knew it was a chance that he should have finished and was comforted by his manager at halftime.
PSV leveled the game in the 48th minute. A great pass from Joey Veerman found Malik Tillman, who played the ball low and hard across the box to De Jong for an easy tap-in.
The Rotterdammers were awarded another penalty in the 53rd minute. Paixao played a perfectly volleyed pass into the path of Gimenez, who had gotten in behind the PSV defence. Gimenez dribbled past Benitez, who took him down before he was able to score. Gimenez dispatched the penalty again, hitting it right into the bottom corner.
A substitute by PSV manager Peter Bosz worked perfectly and ensured that the Eindhovenaren equalized again. A cross from Bakayoko was pushed away by Wellenreuther and knocked on by Couhaib Driouech to Guus Till, who scored from close range just 25 seconds after coming onto the pitch.
But the goals kept coming in this match, as Feyenoord took the lead again in the 72nd minute. Again, it was a substitute who scored it. A free kick from Priske’s side was played short before being crossed low and hard into the box. Flamingo decided to let the ball go in the box, which then resulted in the ball being played back into the box and scored by young midfielder Antoni Milambo.
Referee Jeroen Manschot awarded the third penalty of the match in the 78th minute. Til proved his value again, getting to the ball before Wellenreuther before being taken out. The German goalkeeper was probably fortunate to stay on the pitch, as he had already been booked in the first half, and Benitez had been booked earlier for giving a penalty away in a similar situation. De Jong scored the penalty to make it 4-4.
This was also the last goal of the match. The game went straight to penalties as opposed to extra time.
Feyenoord were victorious on penalties after two PSV players missed their spot kick. Bakayoko saw his penalty saved by Wellenreuther, and Til hit his effort far over the goal.
