PSV beat Feyenoord with ease to book a spot in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup

PSV picked up a comfortable 2-0 win against Feyenoord on Wednesday to book their place in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup. Johan Bakayoko and Guus Til scored the goals for Peter Bosz team in what was a game with very little quality.

Feyenoord was boosted by Quinten Timber being fit enough to make his first start for the club in months. Timber came off the bench and scored in Feyenoord’s 2-1 loss to Ajax on Sunday. PSV started the match with Jerdy Schouten at center back. The midfielder was forced to drop back to defense due to an injury to Olivier Boscagli.

It was a successful start to the match for PSV as they took the lead after seven minutes played. Johan Bakayoko played a one-two with Luuk de Jong before his first attempt at goal was blocked. This led to the Belgian winger having another chance, and he took full advantage, placing the ball into the bottom corner. PSV were possibly fortunate that the goal was awarded as Ismail Saibari was stood in an offside position in front of Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther when the shot came in.

It was clear to see throughout the first half that both teams have been struggling as of late. The bobbly pitch in the Philips stadium did not help but there were very few moments of quality.

De Jong had a chance to make it 2-0 for the Eindhovenaren before halftime. A good cross from Ivan Perisic found the experienced striker at the far post, but his header looped over the bar.

The combination of Perisic and De Jong caused danger again just after halftime. Perisic’s cross found De Jong, and Wellenreuther did just about enough to stop his header from going over the goalline.

The Croatian’s crossing was causing Feyenoord a lot of trouble as one of his crosses resulted in the home team hitting the crossbar a minute later. This time it was Guus Til whose header was knocked onto the bar by Wellenreuther.

Feyenoord had their first significant chance to score in the 55th minute. Igor Paixao was played through after Schouten had misjudged the pass, and he found Antoni Milambo in the box. However, the midfielder’s shot was straight at Joel Drommel in the PSV goal.

PSV doubled their lead in the 68th minute. Saibari ran through before finding Til in the box, who had left David Hancko’s attention to tap home against his former club.

The match was played out in a relaxed way, as Feyenoord lacked the quality to really trouble the Eindhovenaren. A good cross from one of Feyenoord’s rare good performers on the day, Gijs Smal, found substitute Julian Carranza, but his header was straight at Drommel.

PSV joined Heracles Almelo in teams that are set for the semi-finals. They find out their opponent on Friday.
