Traffic jams on Friday as summer vacation starts in south, football fans head to Berlin

The ANWB expects “quite long traffic jams” on Friday due to holiday traffic and football fans on their way to Berlin. The Dutch national team will play there against Turkey in the quarter-finals of the European Championship on Saturday. The summer vacation starts in the south of the country on Friday.

Identity checks are currently taking place at the German border because of the European Championship. According to a spokesperson for the traffic service, the traffic jams will mainly form on the eastern border, “particularly near Venlo and Heerlen, but also on the A12.” The KNVB expects approximately 40,000 Oranje supporters to come to Berlin for the quarter-finals.

“All that extra traffic will undoubtedly cause a lot of delays,” said the ANWB spokesperson. In addition, many England supporters will also travel to Düsseldorf via the Netherlands. The English team will face Switzerland there on Saturday in the battle for a place in the semi-finals.

The school year is over in the south of the country. Summer vacation starts there this year and will last until August 18. The South region includes all of Limburg and Zeeland, almost all of Noord-Brabant, and the south of the province of Gelderland, including the cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Children in the center of the country still have another week of school to attend. They have vacation from July 13 to August 25. The North region is the last to go on holiday, from July 20 to September 1.

Next year, the South will also be the first to go on summer vacation, followed by the North and the Center.
