Three protests set for The Hague tomorrow when the new Cabinet is sworn in
Three groups are planning demonstrations in The Hague on Tuesday during the swearing-in of the new Cabinet. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the protests against the new coalition of the PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB.
The swearing-in of Prime Minister Dick Schoof and his ministers and state secretaries will take place at the Paleis Huis ten Bosch. The 17th century palace is the residence of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.
Amnesty International wants to demonstrate at both entrances to the palace with the message that the new Cabinet must adhere to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The activists want to stand at the main entrance of the palace on Leidsestraatweg, where there will be a view to the steps used as a podium for the first photos of the new Cabinet. They also want to stage their protest at the back entrance where the ministers' official cars may enter the grounds.
Another protest, titled "Against Racist Ministers," is planned on the Laan van Reagan en Gorbachev. Former Member of Parliament Nilüfer Gündoğan is involved in that demonstration.
A protest over greenhouse gas emissions will be organized at the entrance to the building temporarily used for the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Parliament. The activists want coal-fired power stations to be closed, and have called to prevent the emission rights from being sold. Nothing will change if such a sale takes place.
The demonstrators will have a handcart with them with a one-meter high papier-mâché coal-fired power station, according to the protest registration.
