Biggest drug bust this year: 3,600 kg cocaine found in Ecuadorian bananas at Vlissingen
Customs officers found over 3,600 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas from Ecuador at the port of Vlissingen on Wednesday. “This is the largest drug seizure in Zeeland so far this year,” the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said. The intercepted cocaine had a street value of over 270 million euros.
The drugs were discovered during a regular inspection. The bananas were on their way to Germany.
The Seaport Police arrested a 27-year-old man from Middelburg on suspicion of involvement in the trafficking of these drugs. The authorities also searched his home. He is in custody for further investigation.
Customs’ special assistance team destroyed the intercepted drugs.
