Construction Day attracts more than 73,000 visitors
More than 73,000 people visited construction sites during Construction Day on Saturday that are normally closed to the public, organizer Bouwend Nederland reports. With the opening, the trade association wants to create more understanding of construction and show how diverse the sector is.
Visitors could visit 154 construction projects, including a high-voltage substation in Zevenhuizen, a swimming pool in Drachten, and the main station in Groningen. In Kampen, they could walk on the bottom of a new lock, and in The Hague, they could tour the Binnenhof, which is now being renovated.
The construction site of the new A16 Rotterdam highway was the big crowd puller, with 8,000 visitors. The Rottemeren tunnel and the viaduct over Terbregseplein were opened for the occasion. This year was the last time that this project participated in Construction Day. The 11-kilometer-long new stretch of highway near Rotterdam should be completed in 2025.
