Parking permits more expensive in 60% of municipalities; Priciest in Amsterdam

People who need a permit to park their car near their home pay more for it than a few years ago. In six of the ten municipalities with parking permit areas, costs have increased since 2021. The price of a parking permit varies greatly per municipality. Amsterdam’s Singel is the most expensive.

That is evident from an analysis by ANP, which found out from all municipalities whether residents currently need a parking permit. It then compared the figures with those from 2021, when ANP also conducted this research.

This year, 147 of the 342 municipalities have at least one area for which a parking permit is required. Some municipalities have multiple permit zones with different prices. In those cases, ANP used the annual rate for the most expensive permit. On average, the rate for the most expensive permits increased by almost 9 percent.

Car owners who live in the center of Heerenveen have to pay considerably more this year than in 2021. The Friesland municipality has more dan doubled the price, from 45 euros per year in 2021 to 100 euros this year. The municipality said that this was because there were no increases in previous years. This year, it opted for a “cost-covering increase in one go.”

After Heerenveen, the rate for the most expensive parking permit rose the most in Nijkerk (almost 72 percent more), Lochem (55 percent), Rijswijk (over 52 percent), The Hague (almost 45 percent), and Gouda (over 44 percent).

The most expensive parking permit is for car owners who live within the Singel in the center of Amsterdam. This year, they pay 630 euros. In 2021, it was still 568 euros, an increase of 11 percent. After that, city center residents of Utrecht (615 euros) and people in the inner cities of Groningen (370 euros) and Den Bosch (368 euros) pay the most.
