Police arrest Tilburg man suspected of raping woman in random King’s Night attack
A man from Tilburg was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the random sexual assault of a woman in a city center alleyway during King’s Night. The man was arrested in his home in the Noord-Brabant city at 6:10 a.m., police said later in the day.
He is accused of raping the 24-year-old woman during the overnight hours early on Sunday in a shocking attack after the woman enjoyed a night out in the center. “She was violently sexually abused by a man in the area of Korte Tuinstraat,” police said.
Bystanders found the “very upset” woman, and escorted her to the police station, where she filed a report. The woman said that she did not know the man who assaulted her.
Police said that the man had a light skin complexion. People in the area noted that a man in red pants was bothering women throughout the night.
Investigators managed to gather camera footage which may have shown the suspect fleeing the scene of the crime. Those developments led police to consider the 31-year-old suspect, who was taken into custody on behalf of the Public Prosecution Service, police said.
Residents of the nearby area were shocked by the incident. “Really bizarre,” a resident told Omroep Brabant. “A rape in the middle of the city while the nightlife crowd is wandering home.” Another resident responded. Those living in the area said they were shocked that an incident like this could happen just a few meters away from a crowded district where people were returning home from the King’s Night festivities.
